How does Vision Therapy work?
Through vision therapy, the individual develops the ability to use his or her eyes effectively to gather visual information, understand it quickly, react to it appropriately, and reliably interact with the enviornment.
Vision therapy typically will include the use of special lenses, prisms or filters in association with prescribed procedures desig ed to enhance the brain's ability to control eye alignment, eye movements, focusing ability,a nd teamwork between the two eyes. The ability to analyze, understand and use visual information accurately is also improved. High levels of visual-motor efficiency and endurance are developed during carefully monitored therapy sessions using special optical devices. These new vision abilities are generalized through integration with motor and cognitive skills so they can be readily used during everyday activities such as reading, computer work, driving, and even sports.
Are the benefits of Vision Therapy long term?
Most healthy vision therapy patients enjoy long term resolution of their visual problems following completion of treatment. Generalizing the newly acquired visual abilities to the activities of daily life allows these new visual skills to become self-reinforcing. Efficient vision becomes a habit, as hard to break as any other habit.
